          Children's Comprehensive Eye Health Exam Q & A

How often should children have an eye exam?

Dr. Turner recommends children get a comprehensive eye health exam every year. Eighty percent of all learning happens visually, and poor vision for a school-aged child can have a significant impact on their success at school.

Additionally, failing to have your child’s eyes professionally checked may lead to significant vision problems later in life.

What if my child passes the school eye exam?

Eye exams provided at school are only a screening test and don’t assess eye health. They only measure visual acuity and often miss children that have uncorrected farsightedness and astigmatism, both of which can impact the child’s comfort when reading. Dr. Turner recommends that you bring your child in to see her every year to make sure your child’s eyes are healthy and they are seeing well.

What will happen at my child’s comprehensive eye health exam?

Your child’s eye exam at Eldorado Vision & Optical will start with a review of their medical history, eye health, and family health. A series of special tests will be performed to assess their vision and eye health.

          The tests will include:

          Tonometer test

This test allows Dr. Turner to gauge the internal pressure of your eye and assess your risk for glaucoma.

          Autorefractor / Auto-Keratometer Test

The autorefractor measures the power of your eye to assist Dr. Turner in refining your refraction. The auto-keratometer measures the curvature of your cornea which shows corneal diseases and dystrophy.

Retinal Photography / Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Dr. Turner highly recommends retinal photography with Optomap®, which is an advanced tool she uses to create an image of your eyes. She also finds the Optomap image beneficial when comparing eye health from year to year.

OCT scan takes a digital cross-section image of your retinal layers.

What if my child needs glasses?

As a full-service optical practice, Dr. Turner and her experienced opticians can help you and your child find the perfect pair of glasses that improve their vision and fits your child’s lifestyle.
